Santa Anna elected president. Dictatorship established in 1834. End of first liberal reforms. Tithes abolished.

The construction of the National Library of Mexico came by decree of Benito Juarez in 1867 to become a bibliographic repository of Mexico and home to all foreign books published about Mexico. It was linked to the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) for research and to help students learn more about Mexico. The building was damaged after an earthquake in 1985 and a new annex was built to help preserve the books that weren’t destroyed.

Texas pioneers seek independence from Mexico in 1835, achieving it in March 1836. Santa Anna defeated and forced to recognize independence of Texas. Spain and Vatican recognize Mexican republic in 1836.

Spanish (García) and Portuguese: from a medieval personal name of uncertain origin. It is normally found in medieval records in the Latin form Garsea, and may well be of pre-Roman origin, perhaps akin to Basque (h)artz ‘bear’.
