1607 · English Reformed Church is Opened

A Catholic church building had been confiscated during the reformation, then was closed by the city council during the 16th century. This same building was reopened in 1607 for English-speaking Protestants. It is now known as the English Reformed Church.

Built by Jacob Van Campen in 1637, the Schouwburg of Van Campen was the first city theatre in Amsterdam.

German: habitational name from Cloppenburg near Oldenburg, probably named from Middle Low German kloppen ‘to hit or beat’, ‘to beat up’, one of several so-called ‘defying names’ in this area.
