While the growth of the new nation was exponential, the United States didn’t have permanent location to house the Government. The First capital was temporary in New York City but by the second term of George Washington the Capital moved to Philadelphia for the following 10 years. Ultimately during the Presidency of John Adams, the Capital found a permanent home in the District of Columbia.

Estill County was formed in 1808 from Clark and Madison counties. Estill county was a source of Breathitt (1839), Owsley (1843), Powell (1852), Jackson (1858), and Lee (1870) counties. The county seat is Irvine.

The western part of Kentucky purchased by Andrew Jackson from the Chickasaw Indians in 1818. It became known as the Jackson Purchase. This included land that wasn't originally part of Kentucky when it became a state.
