When Hopoi Vaivai was born about 1815, in Vaipoa, Niuatoputapu, Tonga, his father, Latu Vaivai, was 27 and his mother, Upu Sika, was 7. He married A'U in 1880. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 1 daughter. He died in 1890, in his hometown, at the age of 76, and was buried in Vaipoa, Niuatoputapu, Tonga.
