When Gerrit van Eijk was born on 3 July 1808, in IJsselstein, Utrecht, Netherlands, his father, Nicolaas van Eijk, was 23 and his mother, Elizabeth Kok, was 22. He married Johanna de Groot on 12 July 1829, in IJsselstein, Utrecht, Netherlands. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 5 daughters. He died on 27 April 1888, in his hometown, at the age of 79.
