Name Meaning

English (Derbyshire, Staffordshire, and Cheshire): habitational name from either from Whielden Lane in Amersham (Buckinghamshire) or High Wheeldon in Hartington Middle Quarter (Derbyshire). The Buckinghamshire placename derives from Old English hwēol ‘wheel, something which wheels round’ + denu ‘valley’, perhaps meaning ‘curved valley’, and the Derbyshire placename derives from Old English hwēol + dūn ‘hill’, perhaps meaning ‘hill with a stone circle’ or ‘hill with a waterwheel’.
