When William Gillespie was born in 1781, in Augusta, Hampshire, Virginia, United States, his father, Samuel Gillespie, was 37 and his mother, Elizabeth Blake, was 25. He married Mary Mimmick on 30 August 1822, in Alleghany, Virginia, United States. They were the parents of at least 7 sons and 2 daughters. He died on 9 July 1855, in Putnam, West Virginia, United States, at the age of 74.
