He married Modeste Gagnard on 3 May 1810. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 3 daughters. He died on 11 February 1843, in Avoyelles, Louisiana, United States, at the age of 55.

The First Presidential election was held in the newly created United States of America. Because of his prominent roles during the Revolutionary War, George Washington was voted in unanimously as the First President of the United States.
