When Thale Hansdatter was born in 1798, in Sande, Vestfold, Norway, her father, Hans Larsen Melland, was 42 and her mother, Marthe Johannesdatter Finholt, was 35. She died on 12 May 1880, at the age of 82, and was buried in Sandefjord, Sande, Jarlsberg og Larvik, Norway.
