When Rev James Carter Stoughton was born on 26 March 1803, in Middlesex, Washington, Vermont, United States, his father, Joseph Stoughton Junior, was 33 and his mother, Phoebe Duesbury Carter, was 29. He married Sarah Burzee in 1826, in Bangor, Franklin, New York, United States. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 2 daughters. He lived in Perry, Lake, Ohio, United States in 1850. He died in September 1873, in Wapello, Louisa, Iowa, United States, at the age of 70.

The Crimes Act was made to provide a clearer punishment of certain crimes against the United States. Part of it includes: Changing the maximum sentence of imprisonment to be increased from seven to ten years and changing the maximum fine from $5,000 to $10,000.
English (Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire): habitational name from any of the three places called Stoughton (Leicestershire, Surrey, Sussex), as well as Great and Little Staughton (in Huntingdonshire and Bedfordshire respectively, straddling the county boundary), all of which appear in medieval documents as Stokton; see Stockton .
History: Israel Stoughton, who came to New England from England c. 1630, was one of the founders of Dorchester, MA, and became one of the largest landowners in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
