Brief Life History of Abner

Abner French was born November 17, 1699 in Topsfield, Massachusetts. He died 22 November 1788 in New London County Connecticut. He married Sarah Sluman November 6, 1723. She died March 9, 1759 and he remarried Phoebe Blanchard April 3, 1760. The latter was a late marriage and there were no children resulting from his second marriage. Abner French moved with his family from Topsfield to Norwich, Connecticut and 1718 5 years before his first wife died. It is from the records of the Hanover church of Sprague, Connecticut in which we get some of the most significant insights into Abner French's life. A subscription of the residence of the area provided the funds, some 1400 pounds, to begin this separate society. The founding and organization of this society is discussed in some details in these records. Abner French is listed as one of 10 laymen meeting to decide on these important arrangements. These records also show that Abner second wife, Phoebe, join the church in Handover about the same time of their marriage. The death of Abner French at 89 years is included. Died May 11, 1812 in Rutland Vermont. He married Elizabeth Robertson on March 3, 1757 in Norwich. She was born November 6, 1732 in Windham Connecticut. -Jonathan born October 21, 1733 in New London County, Connecticut Mary June 30, 1761 to Phoebe Hartshorn in Norwich, Connecticut his death is May 7, 1782. -Charity born May 20, 1736 New London County, Connecticut. -Jemima born October 10, 1738 New London County Connecticut. -Joseph born February 20, 1741 New London County Connecticut married Mary King March 15, 1775 at Norwich Connecticut. Died June 24, 1814. -Joshua born May 11, 1744 New London County, Connecticut married Hannah. -Sluman Born May 2, 1747 New London County, Connecticut. The capture of Fort Griswold was the final act of treason that Benedict Arnold committed. This would be a British victory. On the American side 85 were killed, 35 wounded and paroled, 28 taken prisoner, 13 escaped, and 1 twelve year old was captured and released.
