He married Gertrude Hier on 8 June 1917, in Bingham, Idaho, United States. They were the parents of at least 3 sons. He lived in San Francisco, California, United States in 1910 and Pocatello, Bannock, Idaho, United States for about 10 years. He registered for military service in 1919. He died on 8 April 1952, in Gridley, Butte, California, United States, at the age of 62, and was buried in Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, San Mateo, California, United States.

Angel Island served as a quarantine station for those diagnosed with bubonic plague beginning in 1891. A quarantine station was built on the island which was funded by the federal government at the cost of $98,000. The disease spread to port cities around the world, including the San Francisco Bay Area, during the third bubonic plague pandemic, which lasted through 1909.
