John Watts Gashwiler

Brief Life History of John Watts

John W. Gashwiler d. Sept. 15, 1883, age 51, per "The Book of the Dead" - San Francisco Masonic Cemetery Records, ca. 1800-1900. "Death of John W. Gashwiler. Senator Schooling last evening received a dispatch from S. F. Gashwiler, announcing the death of his brother John W., who died suddenly at the Occidental Hotel, San Francisco, yesterday morning. No man on the Coast was better known than John W. Gashwiler, who was a pioneer of pioneers, a daring speculator, and with all his faults, one of the most generous men who ever lived. He was in Nevada at an early day, and during his lifetime was the head and front of a number of gigantic schemes, and lost and won as often as anybody. Of late years the tide was against him, and he died a poor man." - Daily Nevada State Journal (Reno, NV), Sept. 16, 1883, p. [3]. Note: Nevada State Senator Schooling was his first cousin Jerry Schooling, also Nevada State Treasurer for a time. About the same age, Jerry died a few years later in 1887. "J. W. Gashwiler, a well-known mining man throughout the Pacific coast, died at his rooms in San Francisco on the 15th inst. He was Gillet's principal backer in the Hermosa mine in this county, and, we believe, also in the Tip Top mine. At the time of his death he was largely interested in Calico mines." - Arizona Weekly Citizen (Tucson, AZ), September 22, 1883, p. [4]. Extensive biography and eulogy reprinted from the San Francisco News Letter. See column 6. - Arizona Weekly Citizen (Tucson, AZ), September 29, 1883, p. [3]. Obituaries also appeared in other California papers and in Missouri as well. He was known as General Gashwiler or just "Gash." General was not a formal title.

1832 · The Black Hawk War

Convinced that a group of Native American tribes were hostile, The United States formed a frontier militia to stop them in their tracks. Even though Black Hawk was hoping to avoid bloodshed while trying to resettle on tribal land, U.S. officials opened fire on the Native Americans. Black Hawk then responded to this confrontation by successfully attacking the militia at the Battle of Stillman's Run and then left northward. After a few months the militia caught up with Black Hawk and his men and defeated them at the Battle of Wisconsin Heights. While being weakened by hunger, injuries and desertion, Black Hawk and the rest of the many native survivors retreated towards the Mississippi. Unfortunately, Black Hawk and other leaders were later captured when they surrendered to the US forces and were then imprisoned for a year.

1836 · Remember the Alamo

Being a monumental event in the Texas Revolution, The Battle of the Alamo was a thirteen-day battle at the Alamo Mission near San Antonio. In the early morning of the final battle, the Mexican Army advanced on the Alamo. Quickly being overrun, the Texian Soldiers quickly withdrew inside the building. The battle has often been overshadowed by events from the Mexican–American War, But the Alamo gradually became known as a national battle site and later named an official Texas State Shrine.
