When Jacob Degen was born on 29 October 1682, in Oberdorf, Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland, his father, Christen Degen, was 28 and his mother, Barbara Thommen, was 25. He married Dorothe Weisskopf on 30 January 1708, in Switzerland. They were the parents of at least 1 daughter. He died on 27 June 1755, in Switzerland, at the age of 72.
