Hans Ulrich Degen was born on 6 January 1733, in Oberdorf, Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland as the son of Uli Degen and Madlena Thoman. He married Elisabeth Buser about 1758, in Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 5 daughters. He died on 15 November 1815, at the age of 82, and was buried in Switzerland.
