James Rankin was born about 1730, in Augusta, Virginia, United States as the son of John Thomas Rankin and Jane McElwee. He married Rebecca Bennett about 1754, in Chester, Pennsylvania, British Colonial America. They were the parents of at least 1 son and 1 daughter. He died on 20 December 1803, at the age of 74.

Mount Vernon Plantation was the home of George Washington. It started off as 2,000 acres and was later expanded to 8,000 acres. The house itself started off as a six room building then got extended to twenty-one rooms.
