When Roswell Cate was born in April 1848, in Quincy, Adams, Illinois, United States, his father, Benjamin Cate, was 41 and his mother, Deborah Thompson, was 31. He married Mary Cordelia Castor on 31 October 1873, in Adair, Iowa, United States. They were the parents of at least 6 sons and 5 daughters. He lived in Fruitland, Muscatine, Iowa, United States in 1910 and Muscatine, Iowa, United States in 1915. He died in 1911, at the age of 63.
