English (Warwickshire): habitational name from Griswolds Farm in Snitterfield, Warwickshire, which is named with Old English grēosn ‘gravel’ + weald ‘woodland’.

History: Edward Griswold (1607–91) and his family were Puritans who came to the American colonies from Wootton Wawen, Warwickshire, England, on the Mary and John, arriving on 30 May 1630. They settled first in Dorchester, MA, and in 1639 moved to Windsor, VT. Their relative, Matthew Griswold, came to New England in 1639, settling eventually in Lyme, CT.
