Name Meaning

From the Late Latin name Calixta, feminine form of Calixtus (from Latin calix ‘cup’), adopted by Christians with specific reference to the cup containing the wine of the Christian sacrament. The male name was borne by three popes, including a 3rd-century saint ( d. 222 ); it never enjoyed great popularity in England, but it became common in Bohemia, especially among members of a Hussite sect calling themselves Calixtines, who believed that wine as well as bread should be given to the laity in the Eucharist. In modern times this name is borne by the actress Calista Flockhart , star of the TV show Ally McBeal. There is also an apparent association with Greek kallista (feminine form) ‘fairest, most beautiful’.
