When Elisabeth Ludi was born on 22 July 1844, in Lenk im Simmental, Bern, Switzerland, her father, Jakob Ludi, was 42 and her mother, Susanna Zumbrunnen, was 39. She married Jacob Gruenenwald on 1 October 1874, in Zweisimmen, Bern, Switzerland. They were the parents of at least 2 daughters. She died on 19 May 1918, at the age of 73.
