    Germanized form of Dutch Kluiver, Kluyver: occupational name for a court official, originally a hangman or torturer.

    North German: habitational name for someone from Klieve, Kleve, from cleve ‘swamp’. Compare Klever 1.

    History: This (see 1 above) is the name of a Dutch Mennonite family. Some Mennonites with this name migrated to Prussia (Germany) in the 17th century. In the 18th century several Mennonite families immigrated from Prussia to North America (in order to avoid compulsory military training) and settled largely in KS.
