English: habitational name from Holmer (Herefordshire), Holmer Green (Buckinghamshire), or Homer (Devon), or else from other unrecorded placenames formed with Middle English hol(g)h + mere ‘pool by or in the hollow’ (Old English holh + mere).

English: perhaps an occupational name for a maker of helmets, from Old French heaumier, heumier (from ancient Germanic he(a)ume ‘helmet’), but it is uncertain that this name became hereditary. Compare Helm 3.
