    Scottish: habitational name from Dunbar, a place on the North Sea coast near Edinburgh, named with Gaelic dùn ‘fort’ + barr ‘top, summit’.History: A family of this name were granted the lands of Dunbar by Malcolm III (1058–1093), and later acquired the earldoms of Dunbar and March. These earldoms were then withdrawn from the family by James I in 1434.
