"The Amsterdamse Atheneum was an ""illustrous school"" sponsored by the city, where famous scientists such as Petrus Camper and Caspar Barlaeus taught classes. It was built from the remains of a 1470 chapel (Agnietenklooster). Upon being founded, the City Library was moved to the attics of the building and formed the beginning of what would become the University Library."

Pieter de Keyser, son of Hendrick de Keyser, built the famous building Saaihal in 1641. It formed part of the building complex known as Staalhof, which was at the center of the textile industry in Amsterdam. The city would help create the most important wool market in Europe during the 17th century.
