When Bernhard Doerksen was born on 1 August 1797, in Nassenhuben, Danziger Niederung, West Prussia, Prussia, Germany, his father, Gerhard Gerhard Doerksen, was 30 and his mother, Margaretha Braun, was 23. He married Maria Braun on 9 September 1824, in Russia. They were the parents of at least 7 sons and 6 daughters. He died on 2 December 1874, at the age of 77, and was buried in Zaporizhia, Ukraine.
