He married Nettie Eliza Russell on 11 December 1887, in Person, North Carolina, United States. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 4 daughters. He died on 15 April 1923, in his hometown, at the age of 60, and was buried in Blalock Family Cemetery, Roxboro, Person, North Carolina, United States.

1881 · The Assassination of James Garfield
Garfield was shot twice by Charles J. Guitea at Railroad Station in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1881. After eleven weeks of intensive and other care Garfield died in Elberon, New Jersey, the second of four presidents to be assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln.
