Americanized form of German Russin or perhaps of some other similarly spelled German surname; its byform is Rushin .
Probably also English: variant of Rushin .
History: Mathys Riesin or Russin, a Palatine German of Protestant faith, arrived in VA in 1709 (from the Netherlands via England). His name was later spelled as both Russian and Rushin. — There also apperas to be some evidence for Mathew Rushing, who arrived in VA before 1670, probably from Suffolk, England, where his father's surname is said to have been spelled Rushing and Rushin. However, his supposed son (or perhaps grandson), who died in 1728 in NC, has been identified by some as the settler of German origin, mentioned above.
