He married Ann Frances Lupp on 9 December 1797, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. They were the parents of at least 1 son and 3 daughters. He registered for military service in 1777. He died on 9 August 1848, in Rahway, Union, New Jersey, United States, at the age of 79.

During the six-year Revolutionary war, more of the fights took place in New Jersey than any other colony. Over 296 engagements between opposing forces were recorded. One of the largest conflicts of the entire war took place between Morristown and Middlebrook, referred to as the "Ten Crucial Days" and remembered by the famous phrase "the times that try men's souls". The revolution won some of their most desperately needed victories during this time.

History: Stephen Hopkins (c. 1580–1644) was a pilgrim on the Mayflower in 1620 and one of the founders of Plymouth Colony. At his death he left seven children and eighteen grandchildren.
