    1881 · The Assassination of James Garfield

    Age 4

    Garfield was shot twice by Charles J. Guitea at Railroad Station in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1881. After eleven weeks of intensive and other care Garfield died in Elberon, New Jersey, the second of four presidents to be assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln.

    1882 · The Chinese Exclusion Act

    Probably an Americanized form of German Gütlein or Güthlein or Güthling: status name for a smallholder, from Middle High German guot ‘landholding, small farm’ + the diminutive suffix -lein-li, -lin or, alternatively, a nickname for a good and kindly person, from Middle High German güetlich, later changed as though derived from a personal name composed with ancient Germanic god, got ‘god’ or gōd ‘good’.
