    1786 · Shays' Rebellion

    Age 1

    Caused by war veteran Daniel Shays, Shays' Rebellion was to protest economic and civil rights injustices that he and other farmers were seeing after the Revolutionary War. Because of the Rebellion it opened the eyes of the governing officials that the Articles of Confederation needed a reform. The Rebellion served as a guardrail when helping reform the United States Constitution.

    Americanized form of Dutch Halenbeek and possibly also of German Halenbeck: habitational name from Halenbeck in Brandenburg, or a similarly named place elsewhere (with the second element from Dutch beek, Low German beke ‘stream, brook, creek’).

    History: This surname is recorded in Beverwyck in New Netherland (now Albany, NY) in the mid 17th century.
