When Samuel Hutton was born on 28 June 1763, in New Garden, Chester, Pennsylvania, United States, his father, Thomas Hutton, was 46 and his mother, Katharine Hiett, was 37. He married Elizabeth Needles on 5 November 1783, in Easton, Talbot, Maryland, United States. They were the parents of at least 5 sons. He died on 15 May 1794, in West Nottingham Township, Chester, Pennsylvania, United States, at the age of 30, and was buried in Harrisville, Cecil, Maryland, United States.

Scottish (Fife) and English (Yorkshire and Lancashire): habitational name from one or other of the many places called Hutton, most of which derive from Old English hōh ‘heel, spur of land’ + tūn ‘farmstead, estate’.
