From a feminine form of Latin Christianus ( see Christina ). Queen Kristina of Sweden ( 1626–89 ) succeeded her father Gustavus Adolphus in 1632 . Growing to adulthood, she presided over a glittering court, but in 1654 she abdicated, left Sweden dressed as a man, converted to Roman Catholicism, and lived for most of the rest of her life in Rome.
