She lived in Belpre, Edwards, Kansas, United States in 1900 and Wayne Township, Edwards, Kansas, United States for about 30 years. She died on 15 April 1970, in Liberal, Seward, Kansas, United States, at the age of 91, and was buried in Wayne Cemetery, Lewis, Edwards, Kansas, United States.

Garfield was shot twice by Charles J. Guitea at Railroad Station in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1881. After eleven weeks of intensive and other care Garfield died in Elberon, New Jersey, the second of four presidents to be assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln.
