Name Meaning

English (East Anglia): nickname apparently from Middle English gad(e)ren ‘to gather’ + co(u)ld ‘cold’, but of uncertain application. The forms with -cole etc. are a later development, a reinterpretation as ‘gather coal’ or ‘gather cabbage’.
