When Johannes Gertsch was born on 10 January 1802, in Lauterbrunnen, Bern, Switzerland, his father, Ulrich Gertsch, was 10 and his mother, Anna Ammeter, was 31. He married Augustine Baerfuss on 29 March 1829, in Eggiwil, Bern, Switzerland. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 4 daughters. He died on 5 March 1846, at the age of 44.
