When Hugh McChesney was born in 1741, in County Monaghan, Ireland, his father, Samuel McChesney I, was 38 and his mother, Isobell Riddell, was 33. He married Joanna Plumb about 1760, in Rensselaer, New York, United States. They were the parents of at least 7 sons and 5 daughters. He died on 15 February 1819, in Schaghticoke, Schaghticoke, Rensselaer, New York, United States, at the age of 78, and was buried in White Church Cemetery, Brunswick, Rensselaer, New York, United States.

Scottish (Galloway) and northern Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac (an) tSasanaigh ‘son of the Saxon (i.e. the Englishman)’. The spelling seems to represent Mac Shasanaigh, to be pronounced originally as McHasney, rather than the English spelling ch.
