When Christen Bärtschi was born on 9 April 1848, in Adelboden, Bern, Switzerland, his father, Peter Bärtschi, was 31 and his mother, Maria Freidig, was 30. He married Elisabeth Lauber on 25 April 1871, in Reichenbach im Kandertal, Bern, Switzerland. They were the parents of at least 4 sons. He died on 12 May 1906, in his hometown, at the age of 58.
