He married Anna Elisabeth Nänni on 8 November 1831, in Herisau, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Switzerland. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 3 daughters. He died on 22 January 1865, at the age of 56, and was buried in Schwellbrunn, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Switzerland.
