When Richard Wilson Carey was born on 3 March 1913, in Hinckley, Millard, Utah, United States, his father, Richard Read Carey, was 23 and his mother, Sylvia Stout, was 21. He married Elaine Inez Smith on 23 October 1937. He lived in San José, Costa Rica in 1956 and Ventura, California, United States in 2000. He died on 28 October 2000, in California, United States, at the age of 87.

1915 · Dinosaur National Monument

Dinosaur National Monument is a park that contains over 800 paleontological sites and fossils. It was declared a National Monument on October 4, 1915.

1934 · Alcatraz Island Becomes Federal Penitentiary

Alcatraz Island officially became Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary on August 11, 1934. The island is situated in the middle of frigid water and strong currents of the San Francisco Bay, which deemed it virtually inescapable. Alcatraz became known as the toughest prison in America and was seen as a “last resort prison.” Therefore, Alcatraz housed some of America’s most notorious prisoners such as Al Capone and Robert Franklin Stroud. Due to the exorbitant cost of running the prison, and the deterioration of the buildings due to salt spray, Alcatraz Island closed as a penitentiary on March 21, 1963. 

1937 · The Neutrality Act

The Neutrality Acts were passed in response to the growing conflicts in Europe and Asia during the time leading up to World War II. The primary purpose was so the US wouldn't engage in any more foreign conflicts. Most of the Acts were repealed in 1941 when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.

English: from Carey Barton in Devon or Castle Cary, Lytes Cary, Cary Fitzpaine, or Babcary, all in Somerset, named for the rivers on which they stand; both river names probably derive from the Celtic root car- ‘love, liking’, perhaps with the meaning ‘pleasant stream’.
