When Jan Zeeman was born on 26 February 1836, in Noordbroek, Groningen, Netherlands, his father, Eltjo Jans Zeeman, was 27 and his mother, Anje Jans Riessel, was 38. He married Sieke Kuiper on 3 June 1865, in Noordbroek, Groningen, Netherlands. They were the parents of at least 9 sons and 2 daughters. He died on 18 January 1916, in Slochteren, Groningen, Netherlands, at the age of 79.
