He lived in Pontiac Township, Livingston, Illinois, United States in 1870 and Ogden, Champaign, Illinois, United States in 1880. He died on 24 November 1887, in Vermillion Township, LaSalle, Illinois, United States, at the age of 87, and was buried in Stearns Cemetery, Muncie, Vermilion, Illinois, United States.

Probably an altered form of German Umbehauer, from the adjective unbehauen ‘unhewn’, a nickname for a boorish, ill-mannered person.
