When Muaulu Tuua Mataia was born on 6 February 1906, in Lotofaga, Tuamasaga, Upolu, Samoa, his father, Sigalu Tu'ua Mataia, was 85 and his mother, Mavaega Tuu'u, was 33. He married Evelini Ilaoa Tuua Mataia about 1927, in Solosolo, Atua, Upolu, Samoa. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 4 daughters. He died on 6 November 1979, in his hometown, at the age of 73.
