Maugatai Loau was born about 1774, in Manunu, Samoa as the son of Simanu Afoa Fanene Tuiaana and Lesina. He married Nive Le'Afa Loau in 1827, in Manunu, Samoa. They were the parents of at least 3 daughters. He died in 1873, in his hometown, at the age of 100, and was buried in Manunu, Samoa.
