When Stephan Hotz was born on 1 January 1800, in Zürich, Zürich, Switzerland, his father, Hans Rudolf Hotz, was 29 and his mother, Anna Barbara Günthard, was 25. He married Salome Leuenberger on 15 September 1831, in Ursenbach, Bern, Switzerland. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 4 daughters. He died on 20 March 1853, in Bern, Switzerland, at the age of 53.

Name Meaning
South German and Swiss German: from thieves' cant for a peasant or farmer, which in turn derives from an ancient Germanic personal name, Hugizo or Huzo, pet forms of a compound name formed with hug- as the first element (see, for example, Hubert , Hugh ).
South German: possibly a nickname from Middle High German hotzen ‘to run swiftly’.
