He married Sarah Ann Dodge on 29 January 1840, in Scioto, Ohio, United States. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 3 daughters. He lived in Lime Creek Township, Washington, Iowa, United States in 1860 and York, Nebraska, United States in 1880. He died on 2 July 1887, in York, York, Nebraska, United States, at the age of 70, and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, York, York, Nebraska, United States.

1819 · Panic! of 1819

With the Aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars the global market for trade was down. During this time, America had its first financial crisis and it lasted for only two years. 

1820 · Making States Equal

The Missouri Compromise helped provide the entrance of Maine as a free state and Missouri as a slave state into the United States. As part of the compromise, slavery was prohibited north of the 36°30′ parallel, excluding Missouri.

1836 · Remember the Alamo

Being a monumental event in the Texas Revolution, The Battle of the Alamo was a thirteen-day battle at the Alamo Mission near San Antonio. In the early morning of the final battle, the Mexican Army advanced on the Alamo. Quickly being overrun, the Texian Soldiers quickly withdrew inside the building. The battle has often been overshadowed by events from the Mexican–American War, But the Alamo gradually became known as a national battle site and later named an official Texas State Shrine.
