1866 · Cleveland Police Department Established

The Cleveland Police Department was created under the Metropolitan Police Act by the Ohio General Assembly. It was headed by a board of police commissioners tasked with the job of appointing a superintendent and officers. The department had become more innovated, starting with adopting the callbox system, using police wagons, and forming mounted units. In 1903, the department was handed over to the city to fund and control it.

1881 · The Assassination of James Garfield

Garfield was shot twice by Charles J. Guitea at Railroad Station in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1881. After eleven weeks of intensive and other care Garfield died in Elberon, New Jersey, the second of four presidents to be assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln.

Americanized form of French Château ‘castle, fortified building’ (see Chateau ). Compare Shadow .

History: It was Jean Nichol(as) Château from Champagne, France, whose surname was changed to Shatto and Shadow after he settled in PA in the middle of the 18th century. His name is listed in the (US) National Huguenot Society's register of qualified Huguenot ancestors.
