He married Mary Aikman about 1785, in Virginia, United States. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 5 daughters. He died about 1807, in Port Hope, Durham, Upper Canada, British North America, at the age of 57, and was buried in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.

The usual anglicized spelling of Irish ao was oy ( see Boyle ), but due to later phonetic changes there was possible confusion with Mac Giolla Mhichil, ‘son of the servant of (Saint) Michael’ in some areas, see McMeel . In Scotland the variant Mac Gille Mhaoil was confused with or anglicized by McMillan (compare Irish McMullan ).
