U.S. acquires vast tracts of Mexican territory in wake of Mexican War including California and New Mexico.

Tennessee was known as the Volunteer State because during the Mexican War the government asked Tennessee for 3,000 volunteer soldiers and 30,000 joined.

1862 · Battle of Shiloh

The battle of Shiloh took place on April 6, 1862 and April 7, 1862. Confederate soldiers camp through the woods next to where the Union soldiers were camped at Pittsburg Landing on the Tennessee River. With 23,000 casualties this was the bloodiest battle of the Civil War up to this point.

Name Meaning

English (East Yorkshire): from the Middle English phrase go fair ‘travel safely’, later altered to Goforth, perhaps through confusion with Garforth .

In some cases probably also an Americanized form of German Goffart or of its very rare variant Goffarth: from a Lower Rhine variant of the personal name Gottfried .
