When Thomas Fanning was born on 6 September 1778, in Preston, New London, Connecticut, United States, his father, Walter Fanning, was 31 and his mother, Grace Benjamin, was 24. He married Christiana Batchford about 1805, in Gilboa, Gilboa, Schoharie, New York, United States. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 2 daughters. He died after 1812.

1781 · The First Constitution

Serving the newly created United States of America as the first constitution, the Articles of Confederation were an agreement among the 13 original states preserving the independence and sovereignty of the states. But with a limited central government, the Constitutional Convention came together to replace the Articles of Confederation with a more established Constitution and central government on where the states can be represented and voice their concerns and comments to build up the nation.

1781 · British Forces Capture Fort Griswold

The capture of Fort Griswold was the final act of treason that Benedict Arnold committed. This would be a British victory. On the American side 85 were killed, 35 wounded and paroled, 28 taken prisoner, 13 escaped, and 1 twelve year old was captured and released.

1788 · The First Presidential Election

The First Presidential election was held in the newly created United States of America. Under the Articles of Confederation, the executive branch of the country was not set up for an individual to help lead the nation. So, under the United States Constitution they position was put in. Because of his prominent roles during the Revolutionary War, George Washington was voted in unanimously as the First President of the United States.

Irish: from Ó Fionnáin ‘descendant of Fionnán’, a diminutive of Finn (see Fannin ). It is also a variant of the name of a Norman family in Munster, otherwise called Panin (a diminutive of Pagan ), Gaelicized as Fainín.
