When Elijah Cody Markle was born on 5 January 1823, in Mississauga, Peel, Ontario, Canada, his father, Jacob Markle, was 33 and his mother, Alice Elizabeth Cody, was 22. He married Deborah Matilda Reightmeyer on 4 January 1846, in Whitby Township, Ontario, Ontario, Canada. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 4 daughters. He lived in Allen Township, Hancock, Ohio, United States for about 20 years. He registered for military service in 1864. He died on 29 January 1913, in Bloomdale, Wood, Ohio, United States, at the age of 90, and was buried in Bechel Cemetery, Van Buren, Allen Township, Hancock, Ohio, United States.

1825 · The Crimes Act

The Crimes Act was made to provide a clearer punishment of certain crimes against the United States. Part of it includes: Changing the maximum sentence of imprisonment to be increased from seven to ten years and changing the maximum fine from $5,000 to $10,000.

1839 · Dueling Prohibited

February 20, 1839, Congress prohibits dueling in Washington D.C. It is inspired by the incident where William Graves, a Kentucky Rep. is killed by Jonathan Cilley, a Maine Rep.

1848 · Cornerstone of the Washington Monument

President James K. Polk laid the cornerstone for the Washington Monument on July 4, 1848. Afterwards, each of the existing states are welcomed to do the same.
